In Memoriam: Ashwin Trikamjee – A Pillar of South African Society

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ashwin Trikamjee, a towering figure in South African civil society, who has died at the age of 80. President Cyril Ramaphosa’s heartfelt tribute underscores the tremendous loss felt across the nation.

A Life of Service and Leadership

Ashwin Trikamjee’s contribution to South Africa spanned multiple domains — legal, religious, political, and sporting. As President of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha and Chairperson of the National Religious Leaders Forum, he was a unifying voice who championed religious tolerance and interfaith dialogue in a country defined by its diversity.

His legal career was equally distinguished. An accomplished attorney, Trikamjee served as president of the Natal Law Society and later as president of the Association of Law Societies of South Africa. His commitment to justice extended internationally through his chairmanship of the African Regional Forum of the International Bar Association and his membership on the IBA’s Human Rights Committee.

Activism and Social Justice

Trikamjee’s dedication to social justice was forged in the crucible of apartheid-era South Africa. As a Black Consciousness activist, he led the Durban Central component of the Natal Indian Congress, working alongside other anti-apartheid champions to dismantle the unjust system and create a more equitable society.

His leadership transcended politics and religion, reaching into the realm of sports as vice-president of the South African Football Association. In this role, he helped rebuild South African sports in the post-apartheid era, recognizing the power of athletics to unite a divided nation.

Interfaith Bridge-Builder

Perhaps most notably, Trikamjee’s spiritual devotion extended far beyond his Hindu affiliation. He was a tireless advocate for religious tolerance and collaboration, working to build bridges between South Africa’s diverse faith communities. His leadership of the National Religious Leaders Forum exemplified his commitment to interfaith dialogue and cooperation.

President Ramaphosa captured the essence of the man in noting that South Africa will “miss his gentle, serene presence, wise counsel and humble yet industrious service to many sectors of our nation.”

Legacy and Remembrance

Ashwin Trikamjee’s legacy is one of service, unity, and unwavering commitment to South Africa’s democratic values. In a country still working to overcome historical divisions, he exemplified the power of compassionate leadership and principled engagement across religious, racial, and political lines.

As the nation mourns, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by this remarkable South African. His work in fostering understanding and cooperation across diverse communities provides a blueprint for future generations.

May his soul rest in peace, and may his life’s work continue to inspire South Africans of all backgrounds to build bridges of understanding in his honor.
