Ashwin Trikamjee’s contribution to South Africa spanned multiple domains — legal, religious, political, and sporting. As President of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha and Chairperson of the National Religious Leaders Forum, he was a unifying voice who championed religious tolerance and interfaith dialogue in a country defined by its diversity.
His legal career was equally distinguished. An accomplished attorney, Trikamjee served as president of the Natal Law Society and later as president of the Association of Law Societies of South Africa. His commitment to justice extended internationally through his chairmanship of the African Regional Forum of the International Bar Association and his membership on the IBA’s Human Rights Committee.
Activism and Social Justice
Trikamjee’s dedication to social justice was forged in the crucible of apartheid-era South Africa. As a Black Consciousness activist, he led the Durban Central component of the Natal Indian Congress, working alongside other anti-apartheid champions to dismantle the unjust system and create a more equitable society.
